Title: Martha Coston
The People Behind the Patents.
With every passing year we are provided with new gadgets to alleviate the problems of our busy lives, yet few of us stop to consider that behind every new gadget is an individual who has confronted a problem and originated a solution. This series of prints is a tribute to those innovative and ingenious people who have shaped the modern world.
Martha Coston spent ten years testing and refining rough sketches left by her late husband, a naval scientist. She patented her system of pyrotechnic flares in 1859 and set up a company that supplied the United States Navy. The system of night communication gave the Union a decided advantage in the American Civil War. The company remained in business until the late twentieth century.
